The Bakers Wife

“The Baker’s Wife” is a fantastic romantic musical comedy written by Stephen Schwartz, the writer of such shows as Godspell and Wicked in conjunction with Joseph Stein, the man behind Fiddler On The Roof.

The bickering residents of a rural village in Provence, France in 1935 have been without a baker for seven weeks. They finally find peace and contentment in a newly arrived, middle-aged baker Aimable, and his attractive young wife Genevieve whom they initially mistake for his daughter. However, when Genevieve is lured away by a handsome young gigolo, the baker loses all zest for life and baking. When he refuses to bake, the villagers must put aside their differences and work as a team to bring Aimable and Genevieve back together. It’s in turns funny, romantic, poignant and joyously uplifting, celebrating the power of love, community and forgiveness.

This delightful musical showcases some of Schwartz best ever songs (including humorous chorus numbers, power ballads and haunting melodies) with a strong ensemble of quirky characters and many featured roles; it’s what Hessle Theatre Company does best!
